THE COLLECT EFFECT

A group exhibition at Gallery Petite

Opened Sept. 3, 2015
Reception Sept. 18, 6-9pm
Closes Oct. 4 2015

We live in a world of shapes, colors, and textures. Most of us walk by them. A few artists stop, notice, and collect.
September 3-30, come to Petite to see the world of these artists. Some are obsessive, scanning every sidewalk for their next material. Others feel an emotional obligation to their collections, building pieces to a more worthy end. All of them struck us with their attention and arrangement.
Collections drive many - the momentum of matching unlikely sets, the thrill of completing a story through objects, the search for completion. Millionaires have garages full of cars they can't possibly drive, while some of the less fortunate fill their homes with dangerous, fetid heaps.
Where is the line?
This September, Petite shares our collection of 15 artists to explore the limits, power, and beauty of collecting.

Outer Lines Inner Space Imaginary Spirit
“Out Lines “ a group exhibition at Gallery Petite

Opening reception Friday, October 16, 6-9PM
Exhibition closes November 15, 2015

Petite Gallery is pleased to present “Out Lines”, an exhibition of fifteen artists who work with linear concepts.
The line is a basic construct in our world--be it metaphorical or literal; two dimensional or three. Some artists love lines, whether their work is abstract, figurative or conceptual. Some artists despise the line and work hard to mask and obscure it. This show is about artists that engage the line as a focus. These artists each have innovative ways of utilizing the presence or deconstruction of the line in various forms and media.
Everything begins from a single point. Two points define a line. Three lines define a plane and so on. The world takes shape, insanely complex and seemingly infinite. A line also defines something arranged along a line, especially a straight line, a row or series. Like standing in line--which these artists are not, These artist are blazing their own trail.

The significance of the line, the fundamental component, to describe the physical universe..
This show presents artists that are metaphorically mining lines in their art-making process. Whether the artist is painting, drawing, photographing or creating sculpture; their use of the line is pivotal. So begins the symbolic equation where lines define a path or a sort of chemtrail, similar to an electron spinning around the nucleus or the line our planet takes as it is dragged by our sun in a powerful orbit. As these lines spiral toward infinity, our artists work their own infinity--starting with a line.

"Nature Made"

A group art exhibition at Gallery Petite
Opening Reception Saturday Nov 21, 6-9pm
Closes Sunday Jan 11, 2016

Perfection, like infinity, is unattainable. Through long history and the passage of time however, the features of the natural world approach this ideal. Time in this case is geologic--six billion years the earth has been under development. Coincidentally, there are roughly six billion people inhabiting the earth at present day. The age of the earth though is a concept understood intellectually but not emotionally. Instead, we can marvel at the results of wind and water on stone over time, the myriad of species birthed through natural selection, the grace and gravitas of forests. The key ingredient for development of the natural world is the slow passage of time. But all forces exist in opposition--does nature push against time? Is time rather than nature our most important fundamental force?

We may save that contemplation for another show. Nature Made is a show of works developed by artist in the thrall of nature. These artists present the organic precision of nature, its cyclical behavior, letting it guide their work rather than imposing vision on top of it. The work in this show seeks to highlight the near perfection achieved in the natural world and accentuate its wonder. The artists incorporate natural materials--leaves, sea shells; also, objects depicting the action of forces of nature, wind and weather. Nature is not copied but incorporated and fundamental. The exhibits in this show will enhance your experience of the natural world and our rightful place among its wonders.
